Info for 8 week students

 
 

It all started when…

April 30th: Week 1 Mixing primary colors (no wheel time) Introductions, assign shelves, tour for where things go, test tile show and tell and talk about mixing and percentages.  What is nerikomi?  Neriage?  Agateware? Nemadji? Niloak?   Cone 10 vs Cone 6 vs low temp, benefits and disadvantages. How is porcelain different from other clay bodies?  Primary vs secondary clays.  

May 7th: Week 2 Throwing on the potter's wheel. Diluting your clays to create tones and various hues/shades. Instagram post of artists for some inspiration. Stacking slabs to make stripes, cutting stripes to make checkerboard. 

May 14th: Week 3 Color part II, secondary and custom colors.  Mixing your clays to get new and unusual colors. Placing geometric shapes together and cutting the cross section for easy imagery. Demo Bowl.   

May 21st: Week 4 stacking vs inlay vs spiral.  Caning, how to make patterns or even words and drawings by creating your design and “extruding it” visually. Trimming demo and handles/lids.   

May 28th: Week 5 Nerikomi and laminating the cylinder.  Trimming. Wood Grain effect. 

June 4th: Week 6 Bisque deadline if lustering.  Studio project work day.  

June 11th: Week 7 Glazing demonstration

June 18th: Week 8 Luster application. Only students with Glazed finished pieces can participate in the luster firing.  All fired works to be picked up in one week.  Personal shelves cleared and cleaned on the last day unless continuing.

All studio tools including plaster boards as well as your shelf are on loan for the duration of the 8 week course and are expected to be returned at the end of the 8 weeks. All students are provided with 25 lbs of clay and four quarter pound stains which are theirs to keep. Any student who uses up their Clay can purchase additional Clay. Only cone 6 Clay or higher can be used in this course.
